Default R + A = Fun

With factions out and people rolling new characters, I thought I'd dedicate a thread to a new combo that is destined to catch on: Ranger/Assassin

Basically as an R/A, you get the best of both worlds.

If you go for a bow ranger build, the Shadow Arts skills will make you a better one. Shadow Refuge is a much better self heal than TU, and Death's Charge + Throw Dirt + Return = evil.

If instead you try playing a dagger assassin, Expertise is a huge advantage, maybe even better than the assassin primary. Dagger skills work like a ranger spike Lead/Off-hand/Dual and they all use 5 energy, or 2 energy with enough expertise.

Critical strikes does more damage, no doubt, but the wealth of protection spells found in expertise (Dodge, Lightning Reflexes, Throw Dirt, Whirling Defense) will keep you alive longer. And lest we forget, Apply Poison works on daggers too.

Assassin primary armor has maximum +70 armor, just like rangers, so there is no inherent advantage of A/R over R/A.

Have fun!

I'm planning on switching my secondary to /A. A R/A is the type of character I've wanted to play since I started Guild Wars last year.

Err it's not a new combo at all: it's even a preset in the PvP characters creations :P

However, yeah that's great.

I think I just read "Shadow's Refuge is a better self-heal than Troll Unguent."

You should be banned from playing Ranger.

I don't think expertise works on other types of skills. Expertise only works on ranger skills unless if they changed that in factions

You could've just done a quick experiment by yourself..

But expertise indeed does work with skills from other classes. Hence why Vampiric Touch/Vampiric bite are able to be spammed for so long despite their high initial casting cost. Hence how assassin skills would work with expertise..
